Shop | Gretna Green Wedding Rings | Gretna Green Anvil Ring
Our exclusive original design is taken from a traditional Anvil of the period used to unite the many thousands of young couples in love. The Gretna Green Anvil Wedding Rings are made in our own workshops by skilled goldsmiths and are only available through this Internet site or ordering through our retail shop in Carlisle. The rings are created in the traditional Scottish Court style which are curved in the inside giving you a more comfortable fit and heavier in weight than the modern "D" shaped style. Each Anvil is hand struck and can take over 30 strikes to create the correct shape on the ring.Getting married over an Anvil started with a number of local blacksmiths in the village of Gretna Green Scotland performing the marriage ceremony due to the 1754 Marriage Act.The Act prevented couples in England under the age of 21 from marrying without parental consent.Scotland's marriage laws were much less strict and a couple over 16 only had to declare themselves as husband and wife in front of two witnesses to be married. Gretna Green was the closest village over the border and found itself hosting many English couples wanting to tie the knot.Today over five thousand weddings are held in Gretna Green every year with couples coming from many countries around the world. You can easily collect your rings from our retail shop as we are only a few miles from Gretna Green with direct access off the M6 Motorway (See our Map for directions). The rings can also be posted to you and we deliver worldwide for those couples coming from overseas who want their rings early. + for larger image
