It is part of the Platinum group of metals that also include Platinum and Rhodium so it will never change its colour and is white throughout.

History of Palladium

Palladium was discovered in London by William Hyde Wollaston in 1803.
Wollaston also discovered rhodium (1804) and a way of making platinum malleable and thereby useable.

Palladium was named after the asteroid Pallas, which itself was discovered in 1801.

The asteroid Pallas comes from Pallas Athena which is an alternate name for the goddess Athena. In some mythologies she is said to have adopted the name of Pallas after she was overcome with grief at having killed her friend of the same name.

Palladium has an atomic number of 46 and lies in the same vertical group of the periodic table as nickel and platinum.

Like the latter, it is a noble metal exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance. Its appearance is naturally white and it is capable of being polished to give a bright luster finish.

Palladium is considered a precious metal and has a density about half of that of platinum. It has a steel-white colour which is lustrous, malleable and ductile. It does not tarnish in air and resists corrosion.

It is found associated with platinum and other metals in deposits in Russia, North and South America and Australia.

It is also found associated with nickel-copper deposits in South Africa and USA. It is extracted commercially from these latter ores.

Palladium it is particularly suited to the process of setting gemstones, machine forming and hand-making which makes it an ideal metal for designer-makers who focus on the bespoke market.

Palladium is much lighter than other platinum group metals and here at The Gretna Green wedding Ring company we have sold many wide designer style rings made in palladium as the light weight makes the rings easier to wear.

Palladium feels about the weight of a similar 9ct gold ring.
