The thistle was adopted as the emblem of Scotland in the 13th century.
It is said that an army from Norway intent on conquering the Scots landed on the Scottish coast
during the night. In order to move more quietly the Norsemen removed their footwear,
however one of the men stood on a thistle and cried out in pain.
This woke the Scots who then defeated the Norwegians.
